At least 12 people, including women and children, were killed and several others injured when a speeding truck ran over a religious procession in Bihar’s Vaishali district on Sunday evening, officials said.

The accident took place around 9 pm when the procession gathered in front of a roadside “peepal” tree to offer prayers to the local deity in Desri police station area of ​​Uttar Bihar district, about 30 km from the state capital. Bhumi Baba”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of each victim and Rs 50,000 to each injured person.

“The accident in Vaishali, Bihar is tragic. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the kin of each deceased from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund). Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured,” the Prime Minister said on Twitter.

President Draupadi Murmu expressed grief over the incident and said reports of the accident were “extremely painful”.

RJD MLA Mukesh Raushan, under whose Mahua constituency the incident took place, rushed to the area and said, “At least nine people died on the spot. Many were taken to Hajipur (district headquarters) Sadar Hospital. , and three died on the way. Those in critical condition Being referred to Patna Hospital”.

Vaishali Superintendent of Police Manish Kumar said, “The procession was taken out as part of a ritual associated with a wedding. There was a wedding scheduled in a few days at the house of a resident of nearby Sultanpur village. The truck driver was speeding by. He lost control on the Mahnar-Hajipur highway. He got stuck. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the accident and directed the district administration to ensure proper treatment of those injured and expeditious payment of compensation to each affected family as per rules.

Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav also expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the accident.
