Moments after a Delhi woman was hit and dragged by a car early on New Year’s Day, her friend, who was on a scooter with her, was seen walking away from the accident site. The latest security camera clip has emerged of an incident that has shocked the nation.
Anjali Singh’s friend Nidhi was seen walking along a narrow lane barely 150 meters away where their scooter collided with a car carrying five drunk men, police sources said on Wednesday.
His actions after the crash – when he didn’t alert anyone and was identified by police combing through security camera footage in the following days – are under investigation.
According to him, after the encounter, he panicked and left the spot. He did not tell anyone about the accident “out of fear”, Nidhi said.
Immediately after the collision, Anjali fell in front of the car and Nidhi fell on the other side and escaped unhurt, he told a magistrate.
Nidhi was unhurt, but Anjali’s leg got stuck in the front axle of the car and she was dragged along the road for about 13 km.
The two friends left a hotel in Sultanpuri on Anjali’s scooter around 1:45 am – they had a brief argument over who would drive – and initially, Nidhi was driving before Anjali took over.
Police initially did not know there was another person on the scooter, but a check of the hotel’s register and CCTV footage revealed Nidhi’s presence. He has since been cooperating with the investigation, police officials said.
An autopsy ruled out sexual assault, which was suspected by the victim’s family.
Five men who admitted to being drunk at the time were arrested and charged with “culpable homicide not amounting to murder”, reckless driving and causing death by negligence.
They said, after pushing the scooter, they fled in panic. After the car had covered about two and a half km, dragging the woman along the road, a man noticed a hand stuck in a U-turn in Kanjhawala. After multiple U-turns, his body falls and they drive off.
