Haryana Minister Quits Over Sex Harassment Case, Denies Charge

Chandigarh Police today registered a case of sexual harassment and criminal threats against Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh on the complaint of a junior athletics coach. The minister resigned from his post, and dismissed the allegations as an attempt to ‘tarnish his image’.

“An attempt has been made to tarnish my image. I hope there will be a thorough investigation into the false allegations leveled against me. I am handing over the charge of the Sports Department to the Chief Minister till the inquiry report comes out.” said

The woman held a press conference at the office of the opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), which demanded the Manohar Lal Khattar government to immediately sack Sandeep Singh and form a Special Investigation Team to probe the matter. He said that from February to November last year, the minister harassed him with repeated messages on social media. He touched her inappropriately and even threatened her in messages, she alleged, prompting her to quit social media due to constant harassment.

Senior Congress leader and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda also demanded an impartial probe into the matter.

The complainant said Mr Singh first saw her at a gym and then contacted her on Instagram.

The minister insisted on meeting them later, he said. “He messaged me on Instagram and said my National Games certificate is pending and wanted to meet about it,” he added.

“Unfortunately, my certificate has been misplaced by my federation and I have taken it up with the concerned authorities.”

The woman said she finally agreed to meet him at his residence-cum-camp office here with other documents she had and alleged that the minister sexually abused her when she went there.

Sandeep Singh, the current BJP MLA from Pehoa in Kurukshetra, was also a professional field hockey player and captain of the Indian national hockey team.

A biopic based on Mr Singh was released in 2018, titled ‘Surma’, starring popular Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh in his role. He was also a judge on the reality TV show MTV Roadies.

He rose to fame after a miraculous recovery from a gunshot wound at the age of 20. Mr. Singh was accidentally shot dead by an Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Railway Police Force on a Delhi-bound train just two days before the 2007 Hockey World. Cup, left him paralyzed from the waist down for a year.
