Uddhav Thackeray today demanded the withdrawal of Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, describing him as a “parcel sent to Maharashtra via Amazon” in a growing row of comments about Shivaji. The former chief minister has threatened protests if Mr Koshiari is not removed.

“This governor who is a parcel sent by the central government to Maharashtra through Amazon, if they do not take him back in two to five days, a state-wide protest or bandh will be organised,” Mr Thackeray told reporters.

Governor Koshyari’s comments on Maratha icon Chhatrapati Shivaji have sparked outrage across the political spectrum, with the ruling Eknath Shinde Sena and its ally BJP also speaking out.

The Governor made the remarks while honoring Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and NCP leader Sharad Pawar.

“‘Earlier, when you were asked who is your icon, the answer would be Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose and Mahatma Gandhi. In Maharashtra, you don’t need to look anywhere else (as) there are many icons. While Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is an icon of yesteryear. , now there is BR Ambedkar and Nitin Gadkari,” Mr Koshiari said last Saturday.
