Muslims of Undela village in Gujarat’s Kheda district today boycotted the Gujarat Assembly elections. This is the village where the police were in October Muslim men are seen flogging Tied to a pole for stone pelting during Navratri garba ceremony.
Every Muslim in the village has boycotted the polls so far, with only half an hour to go.
Some Muslim men were arrested, tied to a pole and caned by police personnel in Kheda district. The crowd was seen cheering as the officers hit plainclothes policemen.
The men were asked to “apologise to the public”, and the police inspector in charge of the area was also present.
An inquiry committee was formed after the flogging incident but no report has been released yet.
The incident sparked outrage, with many questioning the police’s “kangaroo justice”, while others defended the “quick fix”.
News agency PTI reported that a mob of around 150 people pelted stones at a garba ceremony on the premises of a temple on October 3; 43 people have been named in the case.
According to the First Information Report or FIR, members of the village’s Muslim community had objected to organizing a garba near a mosque located across from the temple.
“Police have arrested 13 people after an FIR was registered at Matar police station,” Deputy Superintendent of Police VR Bajpai told PTI. After the incident, a large number of police were deployed in the village.
“The sarpanch (head) of the village organized a garba in a temple. A crowd from the Muslim community tried to prevent it from happening,” Mr. Vajpayee told reporters.
Earlier, Khedar Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhia said a group of people led by two Muslim men entered the Navratri Garba venue and “started creating disturbance”.
