San Francisco Police proposes to deploy robots with ability to kill people


A US police department has proposed deploying robots capable of using “deadly force” and killing people. According to the San Francisco Police Department, the use of “deadly force” is justified in the face of imminent danger and a lack of other options.

By India Today Web Desk: The San Francisco Police Department or SFPD, in a draft document, proposed the use of “lethal force” and robots capable of killing suspects to respond to incidents.

The draft document outlines how the police department proposes to use its collection of 17 robots, though 12 are not operational. guardian Report

Robots are commonly used for inspection and bomb disposal. But the US San Francisco Police Department intends to use them for “criminal apprehension, serious incidents, emergency situations, warrant execution or during the evaluation of suspicious devices.” US media reports said

According to the SFPD, the use of “deadly force” is justified in the face of imminent danger and lack of other options.

The SFPD proposal would allow these robots to kill people “when the risk of loss of life to members of the public or officers is imminent and outweighs any other force options available to the SFPD.” guardian.

The draft document states that giving the robots the ability to kill (as these robots can be modified to add machine guns and grenade launchers) will help officers with “ground support and situational awareness”.

A version of the document has been approved by a committee. It awaits a decision by the full board next week.
